FATTY LIVER FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL NATIONAL SURVEY AIMS TO RESHAPE NAFLD/NASH CARE IN THE U.S.

FLF unveils the second-year launch of The State of NAFLD/NASH Care in America, a pioneering nationwide initiative that empowers NAFLD/NASH patients to share their experiences and drive ongoing improvements in patient care

April 10, 2023; Boise, IDAHO — The Fatty Liver Foundation (FLF) today announces the second-year launch of The State of NAFLD/NASH Care in AmericaTM, a pioneering national initiative that aims to make a significant impact within the NAFLD/NASH patient community. This initiative surveys the real-life experiences of adults with NAFLD/NASH across the United States, promoting the ongoing development and implementation of practical solutions to improve diagnosis, treatment, care, and support for those affected by these conditions.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a rapidly growing cause of chronic liver disease globally. NAFLD is characterized by liver cell fat buildup, inflammation, injury, and fibrosis, with possible progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an advanced and aggressive form of fatty liver disease. These silent diseases often go undetected for years, creating a significant burden on individuals, families, and healthcare resources.

The State of NAFLD/NASH Care in America™ is an anonymous, online survey accessible via smartphones or computers where respondents can share their experiences and express their opinions about the current healthcare system regarding NAFLD/NASH and their overall quality of life. The survey is divided into several concise modules and is available in both English and Spanish.

Participation is limited to adult patients who will be asked to give details about their diagnoses and treatments, the care and support they received, and their overall experiences in all aspects. The survey is confidential and does not require any personal identifying information for participation. All data will be treated as strictly confidential and stored securely at FLF. This year’s survey aims to recruit up to 2,000 respondents.

With the potential U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the first NASH treatments, this year brings a growing emphasis on lifestyle interventions. Understanding the impact of NAFLD/NASH on patient care and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is more important than ever. Data from FLF’s annual national survey will offer invaluable insights for patients, families, providers, researchers, and payers to better understand the total impact of NAFLD/NASH. This information will pave the way for informed decisions in this evolving landscape of holistic treatment approaches, combining cutting-edge pharmaceutical developments with vital lifestyle changes.

“Through our annual The State of NAFLD/NASH Care in America™ survey, we aim to amplify the voices of those directly affected by NAFLD/NASH. By listening to their stories and learning from their experiences, we can create a more effective and responsive healthcare system that meets the unique needs of this patient community,” said Wayne Eskridge, Co-Founder and CEO of FLF.

“As the landscape of NAFLD/NASH care continues to evolve, it is vital that we maintain a strong connection with patients. By gathering their insights and perspectives, we can better understand the challenges they face and develop targeted interventions to improve their overall quality of life,” said Henry E. Chang, Executive Director of FLF.

“Our patient survey serves as a crucial channel for understanding the needs and concerns of those living with NAFLD/NASH. By gathering this valuable information directly from patients, we can work together to develop targeted strategies and interventions that will ultimately lead to better care and improved outcomes for this population,” said Dr. Neeraj Mistry, Chief Medical Officer of FLF.
